Sahlman Seafoods of Nicaragua has been the pioneer company in the shrimp industry when it comes to environmental protection and creating the first area within the organization.
At Sahlman Seafoods of Nicaragua we have an innovative Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle) Reforestation program. The objective of the program is to forecast the productivity of the mangroves and survival of reforested areas. This program became the standard to follow in other reforested areas in the natural reserve Delta del Estero Real in Chinandega.
Our biodiversity program includes repopulating of endangered species with the collaboration of Ministerio de Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARENA). Green Iguanas, Black Spiny-tailed Iguanas, armadillos, parrots, Black Shellfish and “Casco de Burro” are among the species that are repopulated in Mangles Altos. We will be partnering with MARENA to develop a Biological Station in this area.
In 2010 we conducted a bird study within our concession. In this study the health of our ecosystem was evident, identifying 7 families and 2,406 individuals. We also continue the count of reptiles in the area, especially of the River Crocodile (Cocodrilus Acutus). During 2011 Sahlman Seafoods of Nicaragua plans to complete a biodiversity map of the region.
We also have a waste management program for our farm and processing plant. Waste from shrimp heads are deposited in designated spots complying with the obligations in our environmental operation’s permit. The shrimp-head waste has decreased considerably in the last years since most of our product is packed head-on. Every month we separate 5 tons of cardboard, 2,000lbs of clear plastic, 1,000lbs of paper; these materials are sent out for proper recycling escaping incineration at the local waste facility.
At Sahlman Seafoods of Nicaragua we have created Dia de la Expresion Ambiental de Sahlman Seafoods where we involve our surrounding communities, local authorities and other guests to create awareness of the endangered species and actions that must be taken to promote responsible aquaculture. We involve our guests and community members in reforestation of mangroves and repopulation of endangered species.
